Africa is the second most populated and second largest ccontinent in the world. It covers 30.2 million km2, if other Afican islands are included, Africa covers 6% of the Earths surface.

Africa has a billion inhabitants over 61 regions. Africa is borded to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, northeast Red Sea and the Suez Canal. The Sinai Peninsula is to the northeast, to the southeat the Indian Ocean and the the west the Atlantic Ocean.

Africa incorporates 54 states, many islands, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Madagascar and is also a part of the African Union, however this is diputed by Morocco.

During the later part of the Nineteenth century, many European countries began to occupy much of Afica. Only two area were left untouched, Ethiopia and Liberia. Much of Africa was under British and European rule from 1882. After the second World war Africa began to regain its independence once more. South Africa gained independence first, but stayed under white minority infulence until apartheid was abolished in 1994.
