Simonstown the last of the Victorian era
The Western Cape is by far the best area to visit in South Africa. It has the unique combination of Sea, Mountains, Winelands, Marine, Animal & Bird Life. It's colourful & friendly inhabitants will give you a warm welcome. Nearby Cape Town boasts a stunning Waterfront Complex with hundreds of Activities including shopping, waterside restaurants, boat trips, Robben Island trips, Helicopter Flips to name a few. In the City there are numerous Art Galleries as well as Museums. There are ongoing Exhibitions at the New Cape Town Convention Centre. There are Cultural History venues to visit such as The Cape Castle and the South African Cultural History Museum as well as Theatres. The City is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and offers scenic drives such as the Famous Chapman's Peak Drive. The Winelands are but a short drive into the Countryside. Clifton Beaches are amongst the finest in the World and there are many others. Hout Bay offers a Mariner's Wharf where delightful Fish & Shell Fish Meals can be had as well as Boat Trips out to Seal Island. Kirstenbosch Gardens are undoubtably the best the world can offer and a trip up to Table Mountain is a must.
Simonstown is a Historical Naval Town. The Royal Navy occupied it for no less than 181 years. It is now the Official Home of the South African Navy.
It is also one of the few remaining Victorian Towns and has a very relaxed Seaside feel about it. There are all the conveniences of Banks, Shops, Post Office, Transport, Restaurants, Pubs, Places of Interest as well as Sports & Leisure facilities. There are also several secluded beaches as well as the World Famous Penguin Beach at Boulders just a short walk from the town. Everything is a short stroll away and the Waterfront hosts Outside Bars with lovely views over the Yacht Basin. False Bay Yacht Club is ideally positioned and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere and offers all the usual Marina Facilities as well as catering for visiting Boats. It is less than 100 metres to all the High Street Facilities. Jubilee Square nearby is where you will find that unique African Sculpture from one of the vendors and also has the Statue of a very Famous Dog called "Just Nuisance" who served as a 'member' of the Royal Navy during WW2. There is a blissful lack of "lager louts" in Simonstown often encountered in popular European Resorts.
A short drive South from the Town will take you on a scenic coastal drive to Cape Point which is all part of the Cape Coastal Reserve and several animals can be spotted here as well as Troops of Chacma Baboons. There is a restaurant there with stunning views over False Bay and you can walk or take the Fenicular up to the Lighthouse. Tours can be arranged in Simonstown to take you on a Peninsular Trip or even to the Winelands. In nearby Noordhoek there are Craft Centres, Wine Farms, an Ostrich Farm and a nearby Game Reserve with Game Drives available. From Simonstown to nearby Muizenberg the coastline is called The Treasure Coast and nearby Fish Hoek boasts "Green Flag" beach status. Further along lies the trendy fishing village of Kalk Bay with its working fishing harbour with numerous arts & craft shops and boutique theatres and wonderful seafood restaurants.
