Thailand was originally called Siam. Thailand is located at the centre of Southeast Asia. In the north Thailand shares it's borders with Burma and Laos, in the east Laos and Cambodia, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia to the south, the Andaman Sea to the west, also the southern area of Burma. King Bhumibol Adulyadej is given the postion of head of state, head of the Armed Forces, upholder of Buddhist religion and Defender of all faiths.
Bangkok is the largest city in Thailand also being the capital.

In total area Thailand is the 50th largest country in the world. Thailand covers an area of 513,000 km2. The population at present is 64 million. The population is broken down into the following, 65% Thai, 14% Chinese, 3% Malay and the remainder smaller groups such as Mons, Khmers and hill tribes.
The main languauge is Thai, and their first relgion is Buddhism. A staggering 95% of Thai population are followers.
During 1985-1995 the country's economy grew dramatically. Tourism played a major part in this, with resorts such as Ko Samui, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya and of course Bangkok being extremely popular with foreigners.
