The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete has the most inhabitants of all the islands. It is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea at 8,336 km2. Crete plays a large part in the economy and cultural heritage of Greece. Crete holds on to it's own cultural traits (such as its own music and dialect), however Cretans believe themselves to be Greeks. Heraklion is the largest city and capital of Crete.
Crete has two climate areas, the Mediterranean and the North African. The largest area being within the Mediterranean. The climate is therefore mostly temperate. Although it can be quite humid, depending on the distance to the sea, but winter is fairly mild. Between November and May snow is common in the mountain areas. It is unusual in the lower areas. It is not unknown however, as was the case in February 2004 when the whole island was covered in snow.
In summer, temperatures usually reach the high 20s-low 30s Celsius (mid 80s to mid 90s Fahrenheit), with a high of upper 30s to mid 40s (above 110 °F / 43.3 °C).
The south coast, which include the Mesara Plain and Asterousia Mountains, fall in the North African climatic zone, and enjoy far more more sunny days and high temperatures throughout the year.
