The country of Italy has been at the forefront of European cultures and peoples, such as the Etruscans and the Romans. The capital, Rome, was for centuries the political centre of Western civilisation,and also the capital of the Roman Empire. After the Roman demise, Italy would endure many invasions by foreigners , for example Germanic tribes (the Lombards and Ostrogoths), to the Normans and later, the Byzantines, among others. Many centuries later, Italy would become the birthplace of the Renaissance. A new intellectual movement that would help shape the subsequent course of European culture.
