Portugal is found in south western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal is bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, and by Spain in the east, north and south. Madeira and the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores are included in Portugal as a country. Portugal covers an area of 92,090 km2.
The capital of Portugal is Lisbon and in 2009 it had approximately 10,707,924 inhabitants. Of which 97% were Portugeses and the remainder legal immigrants Cape Verdeans, Brazilians, Ukrainians, Angolans.
Potugal became a member of the EU in 1986 and it's currency is now the euro.

Through the mainland of Portugal runs the major river called Tagus. To the north the country has many mountains, with plateaus and rivers in central regions. The south however tends to be flat in comparison and is warmer and drier than the north.
The Algarve is simillar to the south of Spain with it's climate. Portugal is known as one of the warmest countries in Europe. The temperature ranges from 13 degrees centigrade in the mountainous north to 18 degrees centigrade plus in the south.
