From January 1, 2010, Spain will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Due to its location, the territory of Spain has been the subject of many outside influences. However, the country has been important in the influence of other regions, notably during the Modern Era, when it became a global empire that gave us over 400 million Spanish speakers. The Spanish language is the second most widely used language.
