An area in the south of Spain is known as The Costa del Sol. It is included in the region of Andalusia, which includes many coastal towns along the Mediterranean coastline of the Malaga province. Costa de la Luz and Costa Tropical sit either side of The Costa del Sol. During the end of the 20th century Costa del Sol has become unrecognisable as a small fishing village. It is now mecca for tourists from all over the world.
Costa del Sol encompasses the city of Malaga, and also the following towns of Benalmadena, Mijas, Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcantara, Estepona, Manilva, Velez-Malaga, Rincon de la Victoria, Nerja, Torrox, the community of Sotogrande, San Roque and La Línea de la Concepcion.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the area was known as the "Costa del Crime" because of British gangsters using the area to escape from legal trouble in their home country. Unfortunately because of the bad feeling between the two nations over Gibraltar, extradition between the UK and Spain was not followed.
The Costa del Sol is an extremely popular destination with tourists.Millions of people arrive every year at Malaga airport.
Marbella a very popular area in Costa del Sol, is located in Andalusia, Spain. It is located in the province of Málaga. In 2010 there are aproximately 135,000 inhabitants.
Popular beach resorts in Costa del Sol are Marbella and Puerto Banús. Marbella is known for it's rich and famous visitors. It is also known as an exclusive location for wealthy tourists from Northern Europe, and from the UK, Ireland and Germany.
In the last few years Marbella has lost some of the shine from it's reputation. This is due to local government corruption and organised crime.
Marbella is known for it's excellent golf courses and as such is a very popular destination with golfers from around the world.
